Lisbon between history and modernity
Lisbon is a fascinating city with a unique blend of history, culture and modernity.
It is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with a history dating back more than 2000 years and is famous for its Moorish architecture, magnificent monasteries, churches and castles, as well as its cobbled streets and picturesque neighbourhoods.
But Lisbon is also a modern city with a lively cultural, musical and artistic scene.
It is famous for its delicious cuisine, which combines Mediterranean flavours with African and South American influences.
It is a city that offers much to visitors, with a unique combination of history, culture, art, architecture and gastronomy.
In recent years, it has been focusing a lot on inclusive tourism but, also due to its geography, there is still a lot of work to be done…
Accessibility in Lisbon
Lisbon is a city where there are many difficulties in accessing major historical, cultural and recreational sites.
Thanks also to Willeasy’s work, it is now possible to have detailed information on the accessibility of urban transport. In particular, Lisbon’s metro system is one of the most comfortable and economical means of transport for tourists with disabilities, but it is not accessible to everyone.
The system is designed to be accessible to people with motor disabilities in almost all stations, with raised platforms to facilitate access to the trains and lifts to reach the stations. It should be noted that almost all stations have a distance between the platform and the train of about 10 cm and a step of 10 without ramps, so those moving with manual wheelchairs may need the help of an escort. Those moving with electric wheelchairs may not be able to overcome this height difference.
As for walking paths along the river, the Belém district is one of the most accessible areas for visitors with disabilities.
The promenade along the banks of the Tagus River offers an excellent view of the city and many restaurants and shops are accessible to wheelchair users.
Willeasy is working to improve accessibility for visitors with disabilities, but there are still some challenges. However, with the metro mapping system, many museums, routes, restaurants and hotels, visitors with disabilities will enjoy an unforgettable visit to this fantastic city.
What to do, where to eat and where to stay
Lisbon is a city rich in culture and history, and offers a wide range of interesting and informative museums for visitors.
In terms of inclusive tourism, many of the museums are accessible to persons with motor disabilities, although accessibility levels may vary between museums.
Lisbon is committed to ensuring accessibility for all visitors and offers a unique cultural experience also for tourists with disabilities, although, as far as cognitive, sensory and intellectual disabilities are concerned, there is still a lot of work to be done.
As far as hotels and restaurants are concerned, several facilities are suitable for people with disabilities. Many places are also suitable for those with food intolerances or needs.
